Discover a Fresh Career Path with the Necsa Radiation Protection Learnership Programme 2026/27
If you’re a South African teen or young adult who wants a job that feels both safe and exciting, the Necsa Radiation Protection Learnership Programme might be just what you’re looking for. This program trains you to become a Radiation Protection Technician, a role that helps keep people safe when working with nuclear material, medical equipment, and many other industries that use radiation. The training happens in Pretoria, Gauteng, and starts in the 2026/27 cycle.
What You’ll Get Out of the Learnership
The learnership is split into two parts:
- Theoretical lessons – You’ll learn about how radiation works, the science behind safety rules, and why it’s important to monitor radiation levels correctly.
- On‑the‑Job Training (OJT) – You’ll spend time in real workplaces, learning from experienced professionals. You’ll use actual monitoring equipment and practice handling situations where radiation could be dangerous.
By the end of the programme you will know how to:
- Explain radiation hazards to others.
- Use and read monitoring tools for radiation and contamination.
- Pick the right tool for a specific job based on what you need to measure and where.
- Carry out monitoring tasks following proper procedures.
- Apply protective measures that keep workplaces safe.
- Work well with teammates so that productivity stays high.
The course also covers background topics such as basic radiation protection principles, how monitoring devices work, what makes a measurement trustworthy, and the legal rules that need to be met.
After You Finish
Once you pass the learnership, many doors open. You could become a Radiation Protection Officer in:
- Mining sites that dig for minerals.
- Hospitals and clinics where radiation is used for imaging or treatment.
- Nuclear power plants like the Koeberg station.
- Construction projects where heavy equipment may produce radiation.
- Industrial sites that use radiography to check metal parts.
- Environmental or safety agencies that monitor the public space.
These jobs pay well and give you a chance to work in fields that matter a lot to society.
