Municipal Finance Internship – 2026 – uMgungundlovu District Municipality

Looking to start a career in finance? uMgungundlovu District Municipality in Pietermaritzburg is looking for two bright recent graduates to join their finance team on a 2‑year internship. If you’ve finished a 3‑year college or university program in accounting, tax, auditing, cost or risk management, or a related field, this could be the right place to learn and grow.

This internship is part of the KZN National Treasury Initiative, which is a program to strengthen the money‑handling skills of local governments in South Africa. The goal is to give you real experience with budgeting, reporting and financial rules so you can become a capable finance professional.

Heads up: The municipality does not promise a permanent job after the internship ends. You’ll finish after two years and then you’re free to look for other opportunities.


Who Can Apply?

You need a 3‑year degree or diploma in one of the following:

  • Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting)
  • Bachelor of Commerce (Finance)
  • National Diploma in Accounting
  • National Diploma in Taxation
  • National Diploma in Auditing
  • National Diploma in Cost & Management Accounting
  • National Diploma in Risk Management

Other must‑haves:

  • Good people skills – you’ll talk to a lot of people and write reports.
  • Able to use Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

What You’ll Do

During the internship you’ll learn about, and help with, the day‑to‑day tasks that keep the municipality’s finances healthy:

  • Applying new financial rules and the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA).
  • Performing routine finance duties.
  • Managing supplier payments and creditor records.
  • Putting together annual financial statements.
  • Building budgets and filing MFMA reports.
  • Carrying out any other finance responsibilities the manager may give you.

You’ll get hands‑on training and will see how a local government’s money is tracked and used.
