What the competition is

The University of the Free State is offering a bursary competition for the 2027 academic year. It is open to learners who intend to study at UFS and covers any field of study offered at the university.

Who can apply

  • Currently in Matric in 2026 (final year).
  • Resident of the Free State province, specifically in Motheo, Lejweleputswa, Xhariep, Thabo Mofutsanyane or Fezile Dabi.
  • Attending a Quintile 1, 2 or 3 school (including Dinaledi, township or rural schools).
  • Have applied to study at UFS for 2027 before the competition closing date.
  • Strong academic record and evidence of leadership or community involvement.
  • Agree to the competition terms and conditions.

How to apply – step by step

  2. Complete the form and attach clear, certified copies of:
    • ID document
    • Grade 11 final results
    • Matric March results
    • Matric June results
    • Letters, certificates or other proof of provincial and national achievements (separate Grade 11 and Matric evidence)
    • A motivational letter of about 500 words explaining why you deserve the bursary
  3. Have your school principal stamp and sign the form to confirm the information.
  4. Send the completed application by one of the following methods before 31 August 2026:

Next steps and encouragement

The Top 20 finalists will be announced by 30 September 2026. Winners (Top 10) will be revealed after the Matric results in January 2027 and will attend the induction camp the following month.
