Richards Bay Coal Terminal: 2026 Millwright Apprenticeship

Richards Bay Coal Terminal (RBCT) is looking for South African youth who are currently out of work to join a new learning path. They want people who love mechanical and electrical gadgets to sign up for a four‑year Millwright Apprenticeship that starts in 2026. The program is a chance to become a skilled worker who can help big factories and power plants run smoothly and safely.

Why this job matters

A millwright is the person who puts machines together, keeps them running, and fixes them when they break. In a place like Richards Bay, where coal is turned into energy and other products, having a good millwright is essential. The apprenticeship will give you the hands‑on training you need while also teaching you the theory behind it. After the four years you’ll have a professional license that can open doors in mining, manufacturing, heavy industry, energy, and maintenance jobs across the country.

What you’ll do

If you’re selected, you will:

  • Stick with the whole four‑year course, which is approved by the company and the national skills authority.
  • Keep the plant running as smoothly as possible by looking for ways to make machines work better.
  • Follow all rules that protect people, the environment, and the equipment.
  • Learn the details of each machine so you can fix it quickly and correctly.
  • Help the plant operate safely and cheaply.

You will spend half of your time in the classroom learning math, physics, and technical subjects, and the other half in the workshop or on the factory floor building, testing, and fixing equipment.

When you can apply

The deadline is 19 February 2026. Make sure you send in your application before this date, otherwise you’ll miss your chance.

Who can join

The apprenticeship is open to anyone who meets one of these education levels:

  • Matric (high‑school finish) with good grades in Mathematics, Physical Science, and English.
  • Matric with Technical Mathematics, Technical Science, and English.
  • NCV Level 4 certificate.
  • N3 qualification.

You must also show that you’re ready for a tough technical program and that you can keep learning.

Skills that help

  • Love to learn new things and apply what you learn.
  • Can work on your own and also as part of a team.
  • Stay physically fit and strong, because the job can be hard work.
  • Have good hand‑eye coordination to manage tools and machines.
  • Don’t mind heights, as some work will be done on tall structures.

Behaviour you should show

RBCT values people who:

  • Are professional and keep a good attitude.
  • Take the initiative to solve problems.
  • Make decisions quickly and correctly.
  • Stay calm when the pressure is on.

What you’ll get out of it

After finishing the apprenticeship, you can work in several industries such as mining, manufacturing, heavy industry, energy and utilities, or industrial maintenance. Because you’ll know both mechanical and electrical systems, you’ll be in high demand and can move into higher‑level jobs or start your own business.
