Right now the National Metrology Institute of South Africa is looking for fresh graduates with a BSc Honours in Physics (or a related technical field) to join its 24‑month Temperature Internship Programme. The deadline is 25 August 2026, so act quickly if you want hands‑on experience in measurement science.
What the internship is
The NMISA Temperature Internship is a paid, full‑time placement that runs for two years at the institute’s Brummeria campus in Pretoria, Gauteng. Interns work on temperature metrology – the science of measuring temperature accurately – and help deliver traceability from South Africa’s national temperature standards to industry.
Who can apply
- BSc Honours degree in Physics, or a related technical discipline.
- No previous work or internship experience required – in fact, applicants with relevant experience will not be considered.
- Basic knowledge of programming, laboratory automation, scientific data analysis, simulations, measurement uncertainty, physics‑based corrections, and Microsoft Office.
South African citizens, previously disadvantaged candidates, and people with disabilities are encouraged to apply, as NMISA follows the Employment Equity Act.
What you will gain
- Practical training in temperature metrology and calibration of sensors.
- Experience preparing calibration certificates, uncertainty budgets, and technical documentation.
- Exposure to ISO/IEC 17025, the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM), and quality‑management systems.
- Monthly stipend of R6 758 – R8 878 (amount depends on qualification level).
- Skills that are valuable in research labs, industry, and government laboratories.
How to apply (step‑by‑step)
- Prepare four separate PDF files:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Certified copy of your ID
- Qualification certificate(s)
- Full academic transcript
- Name each file exactly as follows (use your own surname and name):
- Lastname Firstname – CV.pdf
- Lastname Firstname – ID.pdf
- Lastname Firstname – Qualifications.pdf
- Lastname Firstname – Transcript.pdf
- Make sure every document is a clear PDF. Do NOT send Word files, photos, JPEGs, or cloud‑storage links.
- Send the four PDFs in one email to careers3@nmisa.org with the subject line exactly Internship_Temperature.
- Double‑check that the email includes all four correctly named PDFs before hitting Send.
Tips to improve your chances
- Follow the naming convention and PDF requirements to the letter – non‑compliant applications are rejected outright.
- Highlight any exposure to temperature measurement systems, ISO/IEC 17025, GUM, scientific publishing, or international projects in your CV – these are advantageous but not mandatory.
- Proofread your CV for spelling and formatting errors; place your full name, phone number, and email at the top.
- Show genuine interest in measurement science and a willingness to learn; NMISA values attention to detail, analytical thinking, and teamwork.
- Submit before the deadline; late applications will not be considered.
Next steps
If you meet the qualifications and are ready for a two‑year, hands‑on learning experience, gather the required PDFs, follow the naming guide, and email them today. Remember, the closing date is 25 August 2026. Good luck – this could be the start of a rewarding career in metrology and scientific instrumentation.
