If you want to study a master’s degree in Ireland, the Kader Asmal Fellowship Programme is closing soon – the deadline is 27 July 2026.
What the fellowship is
The Embassy of Ireland in South Africa, together with the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, offers 12 fully funded scholarships each year. The award supports South African graduates to study a master’s programme at a recognised Irish university in the 2027/2028 academic year.
Who can apply
You may apply if you meet all of the following criteria:
- South African citizen living in South Africa
- Bachelor’s degree earned in 2015 or later
- Honours degree with at least a 75 % average from an accredited South African institution
- Not already holding a master’s or higher qualification
- Plan to start a master’s programme in Ireland in August or September 2027
- Demonstrate leadership potential and a commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals
- At least two years of relevant work, internship or volunteer experience
- Willingness to build positive relations between South Africa and Ireland
- Choose three eligible master’s programmes and meet their academic and English‑language entry requirements
- Never applied for the Kader Asmal Fellowship before
What you will gain
The fellowship covers most of the costs of studying abroad, including:

How to apply – step by step
- Visit the official application portal: Apply for the Kader Asmal Fellowship 2027/2028.
- Create a new account and log in.
- Read the full fellowship guidelines carefully.
- Enter your personal details and select three eligible master’s programmes.
- Upload clear copies of all required documents (see next section).
- Answer the essay questions, highlighting your leadership experience and commitment to the SDGs.
- Submit the application before 27 July 2026, 17:00 South African time.
Documents you must upload
Make sure each file is legible. Missing paperwork may lead to disqualification.
- South African ID (or passport if you already have one)
- Undergraduate degree certificate
- Official academic transcripts
- Honours degree certificate
- Explanation of the grading system (if not evident on the transcript)
- Proof of work, internship or volunteer experience (e.g., reference letters)
- English language proficiency evidence (if required by the chosen programme)
