What the bursary offers

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), together with the SASOL Foundation, will fund full‑time undergraduate studies for 2027. The funding covers tuition, registration, books, accommodation, living allowance and a one‑off laptop allowance. It is aimed at fields that help drive research, technology and innovation in South Africa.

You must be a South African citizen, unemployed and studying full‑time in one of the listed priority areas. The programme welcomes:

Eligibility for current Matric learners

  • South African citizen
  • Unemployed
  • Currently in Matric
  • Plan to start a full‑time undergraduate degree in 2027 at a public university
  • English – at least Level 5
  • Mathematics – at least Level 6
  • Physical Science – at least Level 6

Eligibility for current university students

  • South African citizen
  • Unemployed
  • Studying full‑time in a listed field
  • Minimum overall average of 65 %
  • All courses for the completed period must be passed

  • Up to 6 weeks of vacation work each year

Service contract

After you graduate, you will need to work for CSIR or the SASOL Foundation. The contract is one year of employment for every year of funding you receive.

Selection process
