The City of Johannesburg (CoJ) is looking for new students to join its Group Finance Department – Asset Management – as an internship for 2026. If you live in Johannesburg, this could be the first step in a career in accounting or finance. You’ll learn how the city keeps track of its buildings, equipment and other big‑ticket items while getting hands‑on experience that can help you finish school or a new qualification.
What the internship looks like
- Department: Group Finance
- Branch: Core Financial Accounting
- Position: Internship – Asset Management
- Duration: Up to 18 months
- Stipend: R10 109,86 each month (just a basic salary, no extra perks)
- Place: 66 Jorissen Place, Johannesburg, Gauteng
- Reference: Student Internship Circular 004/2026
This is a paid, work‑based program that is designed for people who haven’t done a similar internship before or whose first experience wasn’t related to their studies. The goal is to give students real world practice that can be added to a resume or portfolio.
Who can apply?
You must meet these simple checks:
- Finished Grade 12 (NQF Level 4)
- Currently studying or have a degree / National Diploma in Accounting or a related field (NQF Level 7/6)
- No previous work experience is required
- Be a resident of Johannesburg
Only people living in Johannesburg communities are eligible for this role.
What will you do every day?
The internship is all about fixed assets – those long‑term items that a city owns, like vehicles, furniture and buildings. Your job will include:
- Watching how the city records, moves and sells these items
- Making sure that every move follows the rules set by the city’s asset management policies
- Checking that numbers in the reports match the real, physical items
- Helping to write asset reports and notes that the finance team uses in their monthly books
- Advising other departments on the best ways to keep track of and account for their own assets
You’ll also get to work on tasks that support the overall finance operation. That means:
- Learning how to follow General Accounting Practices (GRAP)
- Checking that each transaction is correctly entered into the system before it ends up on a financial statement
- Helping coordinate asset checks across departments so everyone is on the same page
Skills that will help you succeed
- Basic computer skills – especially Microsoft Word and Excel
- Good communication; you’ll need to explain findings to others
- Ability to keep track of several tasks at once
- Some understanding of accounting principles
- A clear interest in how asset management works
What you’ll need to send in
When you apply, you’ll only submit online. The application must include:
- A copy of your degree or diploma that has been certified
- A copy of your ID that has been certified
- A full CV
Use Google Chrome to fill out the form – it works best on that browser. The City of Johannesburg values equal chances for everyone, but it also reserves the right to decide who it does or does not call for an interview.
If you haven’t heard back in six weeks after the closing date, it’s likely that your application was not successful. Shortlisted people may need to go through a few checks, such as:
- A review of their credit record
- A basic criminal background check
- Verification of CV and past work (if any)
- Validation of identity
