The World Bank Group is now accepting applications for its 2026 Pioneer Legal Internship – a chance for South African law students to work on real development projects before they graduate.
What the internship is
This is a no‑fee, full‑time internship in the World Bank’s Legal Vice Presidency. Interns support legal research, draft agreements and help with policy work. Placements are possible at the World Bank headquarters in Washington, DC, or at one of several country offices, including Pretoria, South Africa.
Who can apply
- Final‑year undergraduate law students, or
- Post‑graduate law students (master’s, JD or PhD)
You must stay enrolled for the whole internship period. Your studies should relate to any of the following fields:
- Law, International Law, Commercial Law, Development Law, Public International Law, Banking & Finance Law, Corporate Law, Environmental Law, Human Rights Law, Trade Law or similar.
English proficiency is mandatory. Knowing French, Spanish, Portuguese or Arabic is an advantage.

- Create a new profile or log into an existing World Bank account.
- Enter the required personal details and select “Legal Internship – Pioneer” as the vacancy.
- Choose your preferred location (Pretoria, Nairobi, New Delhi, Singapore, Vienna or Washington, DC). Note that placement is not guaranteed.

- Review every section for completeness.
- Submit before 23:59 UTC on 12 August 2026.
Documents you need to prepare
- Current CV (updated and focused on legal research/writing).
- Motivation/cover letter explaining why you want this internship and how your studies match the role.
- Copy of passport or national ID.
- Academic transcript(s) and proof of enrolment.
- If you request academic credit: an official university letter confirming the internship counts for at least one term.
- If you rely on a stipend: an official university or third‑party letter confirming the funding meets the World Bank short‑term appointment fee.
- Any writing samples or additional certificates the portal asks for.
