UMK Engineering Learnerships 2026 – Launch Your Mining Career

New Engineering Learnership – Mining & Mineral Processing – 18.2 (2026)
If you’re a South African teenager looking for a real job that will give you a head‑start in the mining industry, this is for you. United Manganese of Kalahari (UMK) is opening an engineering learnership that starts in 2026. It’s a hands‑on program where you’ll learn to work on the ground in a real mine, build technical skills, and learn how to stay safe on the job. The program is only available to people who live in the Joe Morolong Local Municipality of the John Taolo Gaetsewe District in the Northern Cape.

Why a Learnership is a Good Choice

A learnership is a training course that mixes classroom study with real work experience. In this case, you’ll be placed right in the mining yard, seeing how things actually run. You’ll get to try out blasting, drilling, and digging, and learn how to keep yourself and your team safe. Whether you want to become an electrician or a diesel mechanic, the training will give you the skills needed to start a career in the mining field.

What’s on Offer

UMK has two engineering trades in this learnership:

  1. Electrician – Mining & Mineral Processing – 18.2
  2. Diesel Mechanic – Mining & Mineral Processing – 18.2

Both courses focus on the practical side of the job. You’ll practice fixing electrical problems, maintaining engines, and working with the heavy equipment that runs a mine. You’ll also learn how to talk with teammates, solve problems quickly, and keep your workspace organized.

What You’ll Learn

  • Mining Operations – Get real‑time experience with blasting, drilling, and excavation.
  • Safety First – Learn all the rules and procedures that protect workers on a mine site.
  • Technical Skills – Master the tools and techniques needed for your chosen trade.
  • Teamwork – Work with other trainees and real employees, building communication and problem‑solving skills.
  • Workplace Readiness – Understand the expectations of a professional mining environment.

These skills will make you ready for a job right after the program or help you keep studying in a related field.
