What the apprenticeship is
UCL will run a three‑year apprenticeship in the Midlands of KwaZulu‑Natal, about 50 km from Pietermaritzburg. You will work in a real factory and also study at the Shukela Training Centre in Mount Edgecombe. The programme blends on‑the‑job practice with classroom lessons.
Who can apply
To be eligible you must have one of the following:
- Grade 12 with an N2 Certificate
- Matric with technical subjects
- NCV Level 4
You should be able to work on your own, be motivated and ready to complete the full three years.

- Boilermaker
- Electrical
- Instrument Mechanical
- Mechanical Fitter
- Millwright
- Fitter and Turner
What you will gain
During the three years you will:
- Earn a salary while you train
- Spend about 20 weeks total at Shukela Training Centre
- Rotate through several factory sections during normal operations and shutdowns
- Take a Mini Trade Test each year and a final Trade Test at the end
- Receive a nationally recognised trade qualification when you pass
