Rand Water is looking for South African students who are close to finishing a National Diploma. The job is a 15‑month contract that gives you real work experience in the company’s water testing labs. You’ll be based at our scientific site in Vereeniging, Gauteng.

What the Programme Is About

This apprenticeship lets you do the hands‑on work you need to finish your National Diploma. For a year and a half you will learn how to test water, keep records, and help keep South Africa’s water clean.

You’ll work in four lab areas: three posts in Chemistry, three in Microbiology, one in Hydrobiology, and one in Quality control. The team in the Scientific Services Department will train you and show you how big‑name companies do their work.

What We’re Looking For

We want people who have:

  • Finished high school (Matric).
  • Studied for two years toward a National Diploma in one of the following fields: Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, or Analytical Chemistry.
  • Live in South Africa and hold a valid ID.
  • Are under 35 years old – that’s the age limit for this kind of contract.
  • Have not already done a similar training role.
  • Need this training to meet the National Diploma deadline.

What You’ll Need to Show Us

Your Job Duties

During the 15‑month period you will:

  • Practice the rules that labs follow under ISO 17025.
  • Pick up and prepare water samples for testing.
  • Make the media, chemicals, and reagents that scientists need.
  • Run tests and write down the results in a computer database.
  • Do quality checks on the tests performed.
  • Keep the lab equipment, instruments, and cultures tidy.
  • Follow safety, hygiene, and environmental rules (SHE).

What You’ll Need to Know, Do, and Be Like

Knowledge

  • Strong background in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or Analytical Chemistry.

Skills

  • Clear speaking and writing in English.
  • Comfortable using MS Word and Excel.
  • Good at organising tasks and planning ahead.

Attitude

  • Motivated, careful, and ready to deliver extra effort.
  • Can work under stress and do repetitive tasks.
  • Willing to work extra hours, weekends, or holidays if needed.
  • A good team player who also can finish work on their own.
