Northern Coal Bursary Programme – 2026
Northern Coal (Pty) Ltd is offering a bursary for South African students who want to study engineering in 2026. This scholarship will help cover your tuition, books, and living costs while giving you a chance to work and learn inside a mining company.


Who is Northern Coal?

Northern Coal is a mining company that is proudly based in South Africa. It works to give young people the tools they need to succeed in mining and engineering. The company wants more students to gain the skills that will keep South Africa’s mining industry strong and safe.


What subjects can you study?

The bursary focuses on three key engineering areas that are important to mining:

  • Electrical Engineering – design and manage electrical systems
  • Mechanical Engineering – build and maintain machinery
  • Mining Engineering – handle the extraction of minerals

What will the bursary pay for?

When you win the bursary you will receive money for:

  • Tuition fees
  • Required textbooks and study materials
  • Housing and food allowance (if you live away from home)

You may also get a mentor from Northern Coal and a chance to work there during holidays or at the end of the year.


Who can apply?

You must meet these basic conditions:

  • Be a South African citizen
  • Be in your final year of High School (Matric) or have finished Matric
  • Plan to study full‑time in one of the engineering courses in 2026
  • Be accepted or registered at a recognized South African university
  • Score at least 60 % in Mathematics and Science combined
  • Show a strong school record
  • Be disciplined, energetic and dedicated to your studies
  • Be able to communicate well and solve problems
  • Hold a valid health and safety certificate required by the Mine Health and Safety Act
  • Preferably come from a local community because Northern Coal supports community growth

What documents do you need?

Send clear, certified copies of these items when you apply:

  1. Latest Matric results (if you’re still in school)
  2. Matric certificate (if you have finished)
  3. Most recent school transcript (if you’re studying)
  4. Proof of admission or registration at a university, if you have one
  5. Proof that you live where you say you do (utility bill or written statement)
  6. A motivational letter of 150‑250 words telling why you’re the best fit
  7. A full CV

Remember – any missing item means your application won’t be considered.
