Picture yourself studying at a top film school abroad, gaining skills that the South African market can’t yet offer. The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF) has just opened the 2026 International Postgraduate Bursary Programme, giving you a chance to do just that. The clock is ticking – the application window closes on 9 March 2026 at 17:00 (CAT).
What the bursary actually is
The NFVF International Bursary is a scholarship designed to give South African film and television students a world‑class education that isn’t available at home. It can cover up to R280 000 for tuition, accommodation, living expenses and other academic costs. The goal is to build a pool of filmmakers who can compete globally and bring fresh talent back to South Africa.
Who should consider applying?
To qualify you must be a South African citizen or permanent resident, be accepted into a full‑time postgraduate programme abroad that starts in September/October 2026, and the course must not be offered in South Africa. The bursary is open to:
- Directors
- Producers
- Screenwriters
- Cinematographers
- Editors
- Other film and television specialists
Live‑performance and acting programmes are excluded. If you’re a first‑time applicant, don’t worry – many people feel nervous about the process, but the NFVF provides clear guidance to help you succeed.
What you’ll gain
Beyond the money, you’ll receive:
- Advanced technical and creative training in a global setting
- Networking opportunities with international professionals
- Experience that boosts your CV and makes you a valuable asset to the South African creative economy
- A chance to return with new ideas and techniques that can elevate local storytelling
Applicants are judged on academic merit, financial need, relevance to the industry, and potential impact on South Africa.
How to apply – step by step
- Visit the NFVF Grant Management System here and register an account.
- Complete the online bursary application form.
- Upload all required documents: academic transcripts, proof of overseas acceptance, motivation letter and any other supporting paperwork.
- Submit before 9 March 2026, 17:00 (CAT).
Remember to keep your contact details updated throughout the process, and do not submit late – late applications will not be accepted.
Tips to strengthen your application
From experience, most successful candidates:
- Write a clear motivation letter that explains why you deserve the bursary and how you plan to use your new skills to benefit South Africa.
- Show evidence of a strong academic record and any relevant work experience.
- Demonstrate financial need with credible documentation.
- Choose a programme that truly fills a gap in the local market.
- Proofread your application carefully to avoid missing details, which could automatically disqualify you.
If this is your first time applying, start early. Gather documents, draft your motivation letter, and ask a mentor or a friend to review it before you hit “submit”.
