Kouga Municipality Finance & EM Internship 2026 – Ends 02 June

Ready to start your career in the public sector? Kouga Municipality is offering two paid internship programmes that begin this year, and the deadline is fast approaching.

What’s on offer?

Kouga Municipality in the Eastern Cape is looking for unemployed youth and recent graduates for:

  • Finance Internship Programme 2026 – 3‑year paid placement (R120 000 per year).
  • Electro‑Mechanical Department Internship 2026 – 18‑month placement with a stipend of R4 000 per month.

Who can apply?

Finance Internship

  • Age: 18‑35 years.
  • Qualification: NQF Level 6 or 7 in Accounting, Financial Management, Public Finance, Economics, Risk Management, Auditing or a related field.
  • Residence: Preference for permanent residents of the Kouga Local Municipality area.
  • Language: Must read, write and speak at least two of Afrikaans, English, Xhosa.
  • Skills: Basic computer literacy (especially Excel), good communication, teamwork, time‑management and attention to detail.

Electro‑Mechanical Internship

  • Age: 18‑35 years.
  • Computer literacy is required.
  • Language: Must read, write and speak at least two of Afrikaans, English, Xhosa.
  • Study fields (each with 18‑month experiential learning):
    • Electrical Engineering – 7 posts
    • Mechanical Engineering – 2 posts
    • Mechanic qualification – 2 posts

What will you gain?

Both programmes give you hands‑on experience in a municipal environment. Finance interns will learn about public procurement, the Municipal Finance Management Act (MFMA), treasury regulations, performance monitoring and advanced reporting. Electro‑mechanical interns will work on real‑world projects, develop technical troubleshooting skills and understand how municipal services are maintained.

How to apply – step by step

  1. Download the official application form from the Kouga Municipality website: www.kouga.gov.za.
  2. Gather the required documents:
    • Completed application form
    • Current CV
    • Certified copies of your qualifications (NQF 6/7, N6, or trade test)
    • Certified copy of your ID
    • Driver’s licence (if you have one)
    • Placement letter from your tertiary institution (where applicable)
  3. Combine all files into a single PDF document.
  4. Email the PDF to recruitment@kouga.gov.za with the subject line “Internship Application – [Your Full Name]”.
  5. Make sure the email arrives before Tuesday, 02 June 2026 at 12:00.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Proofread your CV and cover letter – errors are a quick way to be shortlisted out.
  • Highlight any volunteer work or part‑time jobs that show teamwork, responsibility or relevant technical skills.
  • Ensure all copies of certificates and IDs are clearly legible and certified.
  • Use the exact wording from the eligibility list (e.g., “NQF Level 6 in Accounting”) to avoid misinterpretation.
  • Submit only one PDF; multiple attachments will be rejected.

Important reminders

  • Only one PDF per applicant.
  • Canvassing councillors or submitting false documents will result in disqualification.
  • All successful candidates will undergo background checks, reference verification and an assessment interview.
  • If you do not hear back within 30 days after the closing date, consider the application unsuccessful.
