You’re invited to join the John Thompson 3‑Year Apprenticeship Programme in Lekwa Local Municipality (Mpumalanga). You can choose one of three trades: Welding (5 spots), Rigging (5 spots), or Boilermaking (3 spots). The apprenticeship lasts three years and will give you accredited classroom lessons, on‑site hands‑on work, and the skills you need to pass the final trade test. We’ll start the programme in 2026. What You’ll Learn
Over the course of the programme you will:
- Take theory courses at an approved training centre.
- Work on real projects under the guidance of experienced professionals.
- Study for and sit the final trade exam that leads to a completed artisan certificate.

You Must Meet These Basics
- Finish N3 / Grade 12 (NSC) / NCV Level 4, or a similar qualification.
- Score at least 50 % in Mathematics, Engineering Drawings, and trade theory.
- Live in Lekwa Municipality or close to it.
- Be healthy enough for physical work, able to pass medical exams, and ready for training that includes working at heights and in confined spaces.
- Have a police clearance that is 12 months old or newer, or proof that you’ve applied for it.
- Be willing to travel between sites if the training requires it.
What You’ll Do Day‑to‑Day
- Help with regular maintenance and report problems quickly.
- Learn basic planning, scheduling, and control of production steps.
- Follow safety rules and quality checks at all times.
- Set up and run equipment under supervision.
- Keep accurate records, such as job cards and logs.
- Work with different team members to reach daily goals.
