Act now – the Radioactivity Standards Internship Programme 2026 at NMISA closes on 16 November 2026, and the next cohort starts soon in Cape Town.

What the internship is

NMISA (National Metrology Institute of South Africa) is offering a 24‑month internship in its Biomedical Science unit, specifically within the Radioactivity Standards section. You will work in an accredited laboratory that develops and maintains radioactivity measurement standards and provides related services.

Location: Cape Town, Western Cape
Duration: 24 months
Monthly stipend: R7 478 – R8 878 (depends on qualification level)

Who can apply

You must meet all of the following:

  • BSc Honours (NQF Level 8) in Radiochemistry, Nuclear Physics or Physics
  • Knowledge of radiation detection instruments
  • Basic understanding of radioactive decay, radiation‑matter interaction and radiation protection
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • Mathematical and statistical knowledge
  • Good communication and report‑writing skills

Previous NMISA interns are not eligible.

What you will gain

  • Hands‑on experience in an accredited lab
  • Skills in developing and maintaining radioactivity standards
  • Experience with client measurements, analysis, and certification
  • Exposure to quality‑management systems and Good Laboratory Practice
  • Opportunities to attend courses, conferences and present your work
  • Training that is valued by research institutions, nuclear industry and health‑science organisations

How to apply (step‑by‑step)

  1. Prepare three separate PDF files:
    • CV
    • Certified copy of your ID
    • Qualification certificate(s)
  2. Name each file exactly as: Surname Firstname – CV.pdf, Surname Firstname – ID.pdf, Surname Firstname – Qualifications.pdf.
  3. Check the PDFs:
    • All must be PDF format (no Word, JPEG, or cloud‑drive links)
    • The CV must be created from a document, not a scanned image
    • Your full name, cellphone number and email address must appear at the top of the CV
    • Scanned ID and certificates are acceptable if clear and legible
  4. Send an email to Careers1@nmisa.org. Use the exact subject line: INTERNSHIP: RADIOACTIVITY STANDARDS.
  5. Attach the three PDFs to the email. Do not combine them into a single file.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Proofread your CV for spelling and grammar errors.
  • Highlight any experience with gamma‑ray spectrometry, liquid scintillation, alpha spectrometry, radiochemical separations, or quality systems – these are advantageous.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, reliability and attention to detail in your cover letter or CV summary.
  • Make sure your contact details are current; recruiters will need to reach you quickly.
  • Submit well before the 16 November deadline to avoid last‑minute technical issues.
  • Be aware that NMISA may conduct criminal record, credit, qualification and employment checks.
  • Remember that the organisation favours applicants from previously disadvantaged groups and encourages people with disabilities to apply.

Next steps

If you meet the criteria, follow the steps above and send your application before 16 November 2026. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Good luck – this internship can launch a rewarding career in nuclear science and metrology.
