SAMSA Work Integrated Learning Internship 2026 – Apply by 06 May

The Department of Transport South Africa and the South African Maritime Safety Authority are offering a chance that could jump‑start your maritime career right now.

What is the opportunity?

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL): Small Vessel Regime Programme 2026 is a 24‑month training contract. It gives you real‑world experience in maritime safety, vessel inspection and compliance monitoring.

Internship closing date: 06 May 2026
Base location: Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha), Eastern Cape – with possible placements in other coastal cities.

Who can apply?

  • Unemployed seafarers or anyone with a maritime qualification.
  • Certificate of Proficiency (COP), a Diploma in Maritime Studies, or a related qualification. A BSc in Nautical Science is a plus.
  • Age between 18 and 35 years.
  • Fit to meet maritime medical standards.
  • Basic knowledge of maritime safety rules, good communication and report‑writing skills.

What will you gain?

  • Monthly stipend of R10 000 for the whole programme.
  • Hands‑on work with experienced mentors on small‑vessel inspections and surveys.
  • Skills in compliance monitoring, safety awareness and operational support.
  • Placement options in Richards Bay, Durban, East London, Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) or Mossel Bay.

Note: The programme does not guarantee permanent employment after completion.
