What the Apprenticeship Covers

The training is built around the 97582 – Occupational Certificate: Heavy Equipment Mechanic (Earthmoving Equipment Mechanic Apprenticeship) program. After you finish, you’ll be able to:

  • Do routine maintenance to keep machines in good shape.
  • Take engines apart, figure out what’s wrong, and put them back together.
  • Spot problems in diesel engines and powertrain systems and fix them.
  • Work comfortably with hydraulic lifts and electrical controls.

Who Can Apply?

We’re accepting applicants who meet at least one of the following basic criteria. If you have some of these qualifications, you’re ready to start the apprenticeship.

Academic Background

  • High school graduate (Grade 12) with a pass in English, Maths, and Physical Science.
  • Level 4 certificate in Mathematics, Engineering Drawing or Industrial Electronics, Engineering Science, or Diesel Trade Theory.
  • Level 4 NCV Certificate in Engineering and related Design.
  • Technical Grade 11 with Maths, Science, and English.

Prior Learning

  • Four or more years of work as an Artisan Aid in a related field.

What You’ll Do as an Apprentice

During the apprenticeship, you’ll need to:

  • Finish all required subjects before moving on to the next stage.
  • Go through every phase of the MERSETA‑accredited apprenticeship program.
  • Follow the company’s rules for short‑term apprenticeship contracts.
  • Keep any scholarship or internal agreement details in check.
