The Ga‑Segonyana Local Municipality, together with the Assmang Black Rock Mine Operations, is offering a chance for local students to study at a South African university or university of technology for free. Five bursaries will be awarded for the 2026 academic year and will help you cover tuition and living expenses while you focus on your studies.
Why This Matters
If you live in the Ga‑Segonyana area, are South African, and want to pursue a degree, this program is a great way to get a head start. The bursaries cover a wide range of subjects—from business and law to science, health and engineering—so there is probably a course that matches what you want to study.
The Bursaries Are Open To Students Who Meet These Rules
- You must be a South African citizen as defined by the Citizenship Act.
- You have to live in the Ga‑Segonyana Local Municipality.
- Your age should be between 18 and 35.
- If you have finished Grade 12 or are currently in your first, second or final year of university, you can apply.
- You should not already receive a bursary or a student loan.
- You need to come from a background that has historically been at a disadvantage and show that you need financial help.

- You must have passed the current academic year; if you fail, you cannot receive the bursary.
- The program prefers applicants from historically disadvantaged groups and will check that you meet the financial needs test.
- Only public universities or universities of technology qualify – private institutions do not.
