The Western Cape Department of Health is looking for new South African pharmacy graduates to join a 12‑month Pharmacist Internship program for the 2025/2026 academic year. The role will be based at the Mitchell’s Plain Community Health Centre, where you’ll learn to manage medicine supplies, handle lab work, and give patients clear advice on their medicines. This internship is paid – you’ll earn R440,226 a year – and it’s a great chance to build real‑world experience in a busy healthcare setting.

Who should apply?

If you’re a recent pharmacy grad, registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), and you love working with people while keeping medicines safe and effective, this internship is for you. You’ll work under the guidance of experienced pharmacists, gaining confidence in everything from prescription checks to public health outreach.

What you’ll do

  • Check prescriptions and dispense medicines accurately to patients.
  • Help keep track of medicine stock, order new supplies, and store drugs properly.
  • Follow pharmacy rules and keep the budget in check.
  • Teach and support other pharmacy staff and health workers when needed.
  • Take part in community health promotion projects.
  • Show care for quality, following Good Pharmacy Practice and safety standards.
  • Step up to solve everyday challenges and help improve the clinic’s workflow.

What you need

Before you apply, make sure you meet these basic criteria:

  • Graduated with a pharmacy degree recognized by the SAPC and able to register as a Pharmacist Intern.
  • Proof of SAPC registration or a signed statement that you’ve applied and paid the fee (you’ll need to show this at the interview).
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Good understanding of pharmacy laws and health policies in South Africa.
  • Ability to stay precise and calm, even when things get busy.
  • Strong people skills – you should feel comfortable talking to patients and colleagues.
  • High levels of integrity and professional behaviour.
