The University of Pretoria is looking for a Veterinary Nurse Intern to join the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) in the Faculty of Veterinary Science. What the internship is all about

OVAH is a leading centre for veterinary training, research and patient care. As a Veterinary Nurse Intern you will be part of a lively team that cares for sick and injured animals, supports student learning and keeps the clinic running smoothly. You’ll help with everything from feeding and monitoring patients to assisting with procedures, while keeping the hospital clean and safe.


What you’ll do every day

  • Take care of animals: Watch their health, feed them, help with treatments and keep a record of what’s happening.
  • Keep the clinic tidy: Manage supplies, order medicine when needed, maintain equipment and follow safety rules.
  • Help students learn: Show them how to set up injections, work with operating theatres and use diagnostic tools.
  • Talk with people: Answer questions from pet owners, sales reps, private vets and visiting students.
  • Stay safe and follow biosecurity: Make sure everyone follows the rules and report any problems.
  • Learn and grow: Keep improving your skills and knowledge.
  • Be flexible: Work in different parts of OVAH and be ready for weekends or late shifts if required.

What you need to apply

  • A BVetNurse qualification.
  • Registration as a Veterinary Nurse with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC).

Skills that will help you succeed

  • Knowing how to care for both small and large animals.
  • Experience with ICU gear, basic imaging and operating theatre equipment.
  • Good eye for detail, professionalism and a sense of responsibility.
  • Clear communication and good organisation.
  • Stamina to move around and handle stress.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Willingness to work on weekends, evenings and nights.

Extra points

  • Being a member of the Veterinary Nursing Association of South Africa (VNASA) is a plus.
