If you’re a South African teen who isn’t working yet and you’re curious about engineering, there’s a chance to start a real career in the rail world. Traxtion is inviting young people to join its 2026 Engineering Apprenticeship Programme. The role is called a Diesel Electrical Fitter Apprenticeship and it lasts three years. It takes place in Rosslyn, Pretoria, in the Gauteng province. If you finish the apprenticeship you get a QCTO‑approved certificate and become a qualified artisan in diesel electrical fitting.
What the apprenticeship is about
Traxtion is looking for people who want to learn how to work on diesel‑powered trains. The training happens at its Rail Services Hub Training Centre in Rosslyn. You will get both classroom lessons and hands‑on work on real engines and electrical systems. The programme is designed to give you the skills and the paperwork that shows you are ready to work in the rail industry. After three years you will hold a respected qualification and be able to work on trains and transport equipment.
Fields you’ll study
The apprenticeship is focused on diesel electrical fitting. You will learn about the electrical components inside a diesel engine, how to read schematics, and how to keep a train’s power system running smoothly. You will also get a basic understanding of mechanical parts and how they interact with electrical systems. The goal is to give you a solid foundation so you can move into a professional role later.
Who can join
To apply you must have finished high school (matric) with grades in Mathematics, Science and English. You also need to have taken N2 trade subjects. The program is mainly for people aged 18 to 25, but it doesn’t matter if you’re older as long as you meet the other requirements. You must be able to speak and write clearly in English.
It helps if you already have a technical qualification in one of these areas:
- Mechanical engineering
- Technical engineering
- Diesel fitting
- Electrical fitting
If you’ve worked somewhere in the rail or transport industry before, that is a bonus. Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and a general knowledge of how mechanical parts work are also useful.
What you need to be good at
The job will test your ability to juggle several tasks at once and finish them on time. You need to be reliable, show up on schedule and do your work accurately. It can be a high‑pressure environment, so staying calm under stress and paying close attention to detail is important. If you enjoy fixing things and solving engineering puzzles, you will fit right in.
Why this is a good idea
Rail travel is a big part of how South Africa moves people and goods. A career in this sector offers steady work and the chance to keep learning. The certification you earn is recognised across the country, so it can open doors to many jobs in the transport and engineering fields. The apprenticeship will give you real experience and the knowledge you need to grow as a skilled worker.
How to send your application
You must send your application before 20 February 2026. Email your materials to Carrers@traxtionafrica.onmicrosoft.com. Use the subject line “Apprentice – Diesel Electrical Fitter (Rosslyn)”. Bring these documents:
