Transnet Port Terminals: 2026 Port Sector Trainee Program – Apply Today

Port Terminal Trainee – 12‑Month Training Program at Transnet SOC Ltd
If you’re a high‑school graduate who loves working with trucks, cargo or technology, the Port Terminal Trainee Program might be a perfect start to your career. In this 12‑month course, you’ll learn how to run a busy port, get hands‑on experience with real equipment, and earn a job that can keep you busy for years. The training takes place at two ports in the Eastern Cape: Ngqura and East London.

Why this program matters
Port terminals are the hubs where ships unload their goods and where everything gets sorted and shipped to its next destination. By joining this trainee program, you’ll learn the everyday tasks that keep a port running smoothly. You’ll also get the chance to work with advanced software used worldwide and become a part of a big, growing company in South Africa’s logistics sector.

Where the program is held

  • Ngqura, Eastern Cape – If you live in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, you’ll get priority.
  • East London, Eastern Cape – If you live in Buffalo City Municipality, you’ll get priority.

Both locations give you a chance to see how a major port works, from loading cargo to keeping everything safe.

What you’ll do in the trainee program

During the year, you’ll be put in a role that matches your school background and the kinds of jobs the port needs. You’ll:

  1. Operate the equipment you’re trained on every day.
  2. Move cargo and other goods while following strict rules.
  3. Keep a log of everything you do and note any equipment problems.
  4. Use computers and radios to stay connected with the rest of the team.
  5. Watch equipment and report anything that isn’t working.
  6. Tell the team about any incidents or accidents.
  7. Handle safety gear such as fire extinguishers.
  8. Follow all safety policies exactly.
  9. Work with the terminal operating system called Navis.
  10. Follow on‑screen prompts and confirm that tasks are finished.

The program is designed so you finish the year ready to jump straight into a full‑time role at the port.
