The Apprentice Boilermaker role at Transnet Corporate Centre is a hands‑on job that lets young South Africans learn to build and repair metal structures. You’ll work out in the Koedoespoort site in Gauteng, and the job is open to people who want to start a career in engineering and metal work. The application deadline is 18 November 2025.


Why this apprenticeship matters

This programme is built to give you real skills that you can use in the workplace. You’ll spend time in a classroom learning the theory behind metal work, and then move to the shop floor to practice the same things you read about. By the end of the training you should be ready to work independently, use tools safely, and make sure every piece of metal is strong and ready for use.


What you’ll do

When you finish, you should be able to:

  • Get a job site ready, choose the right tools and materials, and plan how to do the work.
  • Use hand tools, power tools and measuring instruments without problems.
  • Cut, shape, weld and join metal parts, then check them for quality.
  • Fix and improve metal structures or equipment that is already in use.
  • Run tests and do inspections to keep everything safe and up to standard.

What you need to qualify

You only need to meet one of the following educational routes. All of them include maths and a science that helps you understand how metal behaves.

Option 1: N2 Certificate

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Plating & Structural Drawing
  • Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
  • Metal Worker’s Theory
  • Plater’s Theory

Option 2: N3–N6 Certificate

  • Pure Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • Plating & Structural Drawing
  • Engineering Drawing (Draughting)
  • Mechanotechnology

Option 3: NCV Level 4 (Vocational)

  • Fundamentals (including English and Life Orientation)
  • Pure Mathematics
  • Vocational subjects: Engineering Process, Professional Engineering Practice, Applied Engineering Technology, Welding

Option 4: Technical Grade 12

  • Mechanical Technology (Welding and Metal Work)
  • Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Engineering and Graphic Design
  • Home Language and First Additional Language
  • Life Orientation

Extra qualifications

  • Age 18‑35
  • South African citizen
  • Good at speaking and writing
  • Can solve problems and work well in a team
