Looking to become a Chartered Accountant?
Standard Bank is launching a new CA Training Programme for 2026, and they’re calling out to students and recent grads who want to learn accounting inside a bank rather than in a traditional audit firm. The programme runs in Johannesburg, South Africa, and you have until 31 May 2026 to send in your application. If you’re aiming for a solid start in the finance world, this could be the right fit for you.
What the Programme Is All About
The CA Training Programme is a three‑year course that blends real banking work with the study required to become a Chartered Accountant (CA (SA)). Over the past 25 years, Standard Bank has offered this path to people who prefer a different route than the usual audit track. It’s not just about numbers; you’ll also see how a bank runs, how loans are approved, how risk is measured, and how technology is changing finance.
Why choose this path?
- You’ll work in a dynamic setting that changes every day.
- You’ll see how financial policies affect customers and the economy.
- You’ll get the same CA qualifications that auditors need, but with a fresh perspective.
- The bank helps you grow into a leader with coaching and leadership sessions.
- After the programme, you can stay with Standard Bank in a permanent role that matches your strengths.
A Year‑by‑Year Snapshot
First Year
You start with short rotations that focus on finance. These assignments help you meet the SAICA (South African Institute of Chartered Accountants) requirements while giving you a broad view of the bank’s operations.
Second Year
Now the rotations are tailored to what you enjoy and to the skills you still need to develop. You’ll dive deeper into a few areas, like corporate finance, risk management, or digital banking, depending on your interests.
Third Year
You finish the SAICA coursework and keep exploring the business side of the bank. You’ll have a clearer picture of where you want to go next, and the company will help you find a permanent position that fits your new skill set.
All the Help You Need
Standard Bank makes sure you’re ready to succeed with a support package that covers:
- Exam help – Guidance for the ITC and APC exams that certify you as a Chartered Accountant.
- Leadership training – Programs to sharpen your leadership skills.
- Learning resources – Access to platforms that keep you updated on accounting standards and new tech.
- Meetings with senior leaders – Insight sessions where you can ask questions and learn from experienced managers.
- Mentoring – A dedicated mentor and coach will walk with you through the programme.
You’ll have a clear plan and the tools to finish the course strong, both academically and professionally.
Who Should Apply
You’re eligible if you’ve finished or are finishing one of these qualifications:
- SAICA‑accredited Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA)
- Honours in Accounting
- Postgraduate Diploma in Accounting (PGDA) or a similar degree
- Graduate Diploma in Accounting (GDA) or a comparable course
After you pass the GDA, CTA, or PGDA, you need to be ready to sit for the IAC Board assessment. If you’re currently doing CTA Level 1 or a BCTA bridging course, this isn’t the right time to apply.
Why Standard Bank Stands Out
This programme is one of South Africa’s most respected options for people who want to become a Chartered Accountant outside of audit. The benefits include:
- Hands‑on experience with real bank functions
- A fast track to getting all the SAICA competencies
- Growth in leadership and professional skills
- A chance to earn a permanent spot in a global banking organization
If you’re ready to jump into the fast‑moving world of finance and learn by doing, this could be a great chance.
