The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) is now accepting applications for the Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2027 Intake. If you’re a young South African who wants to serve your country while learning real‑world military skills and building a solid career, this is your chance.
What’s the MSDS all about?
The MSDS is a step‑by‑step programme run by the SANDF. It starts with one year of basic training. You’ll learn the essentials of military life and then move on to specialised courses that match the division you’re joining. In the second year, you’re sent to a unit where you’ll put those lessons into practice, take on leadership roles, and develop the discipline that the defence sector needs.
This program is perfect if you’re thinking about a future in the military, want a clear training path, and need leadership skills that work in many jobs later on. It also gives you a behind‑the‑scenes look at defence and security operations.
Who can join?
To be eligible, you must meet these simple rules:
- Citizen – You need to be a South African citizen only. No dual passports.
- Age – 18‑22 years old if you just finished Grade 12. 18‑26 if you have a 3‑year tertiary qualification.
- Grades – You must have an APS score that meets the requirement (Life Orientation grades are not counted).
- Math & Physical Science – Needed if you’re applying for engineering or similar technical roles.
- Clean record – No criminal convictions or ongoing cases.
- Health – You must pass all fitness tests, drug screening, and a psychological evaluation.
- Uniform look – No visible tattoos while in uniform.

- A certified copy of your ID.
- A certified copy of your matric certificate (only 2025 results are accepted).
- If you have a university qualification, bring the official paperwork.
