SAIIPL Bursary 2026: R70k IP Law Funding LLB/LLM, Apply by 31 March

Ready to pay your tuition fees and jumpstart a career in intellectual property law? The Thapelomadibeng Bursary is still accepting applications for the 2026 South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL) bursary programme, but you only have until 31 March 2026 to apply. Don’t wait, because late submissions won’t be considered.

What’s the SAIIPL Bursary All About?

The South African Institute of Intellectual Property Law (SAIIPL) is a professional body that sets high standards for trade marks, copyright and patent lawyers. To help shape the next generation of IP lawyers, it’s offering four bursaries for the 2026 academic year. Each bursary is worth R70 000 and can be used to cover outstanding tuition fees for an LLB or LLM student.

Who Should Apply?

If you’re a South African citizen or permanent resident, aged between 18 and 30, and you’re currently studying toward an LLB or LLM at a recognised South African university, you’re eligible. Other requirements are:

  • Strong academic potential
  • Eligibility to become an attorney under the Legal Practice Act
  • Completed at least one WIPO course (for example DL001) and proof of completion
  • A clear interest in one of these IP fields: trade marks, copyright, patents, designs, indigenous knowledge, plant breeders’ rights, geographical indicators or trade secrets
  • Demonstrated financial need
  • For patent bursaries: proof that you can enrol for Patent Examinations

Four bursaries will be split: two for patent law and two for trade mark and/or copyright law.

What You’ll Gain

Beyond the R70 000 that covers tuition, the bursary gives you:

  • Direct exposure to the IP sector and its evolving legal landscape
  • Mentorship opportunities with seasoned IP practitioners
  • Networking with peers who share your passion for IP law
  • A boost to your CV that shows you’re committed to this specialty
  • Financial freedom to focus on your studies rather than debt

How to Apply – Step By Step

  1. Gather the required documents (see below).
  2. Write a concise motivational letter (max 500 words). Mention whether you’re applying for a patent or trade mark bursary and your career goals in IP.
  3. Send all documents to saiipl@saiipl.co.za with the subject line SAIIPL Bursary 2026 and address the email to Ms Michelle Macguire.
  4. Remember, there is no separate online application form; everything goes through email.

Required Supporting Documents

  • Certified copy of ID or passport
  • Certified academic transcripts for all years of study
  • Proof of registration for the current or upcoming academic year
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of financial need (e.g., household income statement)
  • Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  • Motivational letter (max 500 words) covering: interest in IP law, whether you’re applying for a patent or trade mark bursary, and your career aspirations
  • Consent to an open and honest interview and publication of your application details
  • Optional: Letter of recommendation
  • For patent applicants: proof of qualification to enrol for Patent Examinations

Practical Tips to Boost Your Chances

Many applicants struggle with organising all the paperwork. From experience, most successful candidates send a neat, labelled PDF bundle and keep a backup copy in the cloud. Make sure your CV is up‑to‑date and that your motivational letter clearly shows why you love IP law. If it’s your first time applying, don’t worry – the selection panel looks for genuine enthusiasm as much as academic merit.

What Happens Next?

All submissions will be reviewed, and shortlisted candidates will be notified by 31 July 2026. If you do not hear back by that date, consider your application unsuccessful.

Ready to Apply?

Don’t let this opportunity slip by. Gather your documents, craft a strong letter, and email everything to saiipl@saiipl.co.za before the deadline on 31 March 2026. Good luck, and may you secure a spot in South Africa’s growing IP field!
