The Renosterberg Local Municipality is looking for South African graduates who are not currently working to join the Municipal Finance Management Internship Programme (MFMIP) for 2026. This is a paid, two‑year training job that gives you real work experience in city budgeting and cash‑management. You’ll learn to handle money that belongs to the local community, and you’ll earn a salary of R120,000 a year (the exact amount depends on whether you’re in your first or second year of the program). Three spots are available at the municipality’s office in Petrusville, Northern Cape. Applications close on 4 December 2025.
What the MFMIP is all about
The MFMIP is a step‑by‑step training program that turns fresh university grads into people who know how a city’s finances work. You’ll be in the Budget and Treasury Office, where you’ll see how a municipality plans its money, keeps its accounts in order, and makes sure every expense follows the law. The program follows the rules in the Municipal Finance Management Act (Act 56 of 2003). When you finish, you may be able to earn a qualification or credit in Municipal Finance Management, which is recognised by the government’s minimum skill standards.
When you start, you’ll sign an internship agreement that links your school assignments to what you do on the job. This makes sure you keep up with the municipality’s policies and stay focused on both learning and working.
Who can apply
You need a three‑year Bachelor’s degree or a National Diploma in one of these subjects:
- Accounting
- Economics
- Finance
- Risk Management
- Auditing
Or a closely related field that deals with money. You must be between 21 and 35 years old. If you’re accepted, you have to take part in all parts of the internship – the classroom or online lessons, the day‑to‑day work tasks, and the official rules of the municipality.
Shortlisted applicants must bring their original certificates to the interview.
What you’ll learn
During the internship you’ll be exposed to:
- How a city budgets its money and plans for the future
- The job of a Treasury, including how to manage cash flow
- How to prepare financial reports that follow the law
- Principles of internal controls, risk management, and auditing
- How financial reforms are put into practice in a local government
- The practical side of city finance laws and rules
These experiences give you a good foundation if you want to stay in municipal finance after the internship is over.
