Want to start an engineering career without a degree? Exxaro Leeuwpan Coal is offering three new learning jobs for 2026 that could give you the skills and on‑the‑job experience you need.
These are Learnerships – a paid training program that combines classroom lessons with real work at a coal mine. They’re open to South African teenagers and young adults who are currently out of work and looking for a path into engineering.
Apply by 16 February 2026. The training will happen at the Exxaro Leeuwpan Coal site in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality, Mpumalanga.

What the Learnership Looks Like
Each program is split into two parts: formal courses that cover the basics you need to know, and hands‑on work where you practice those skills in the real world. The goal is to finish with a solid set of technical knowledge and practical experience that employers want.
The programs fall under the broader category of Skills Development, which means they’re made to help people grow, stay focused, and learn good work habits.
The Three Engineering Paths Available
You can choose one of these three tracks:
- Electrical Engineering – learn to design, install, and maintain power systems.
- Plater / Welder (Boilermaker) – get hands‑on skills in welding and metal fabrication.
- Fitting and Machinery – work with heavy equipment, pipes, and mechanical systems.
What You’ll Do
If you’re selected, you’ll be expected to:
- Follow the training plan and meet your learning targets.
- Adhere to company rules, safety rules, and general workplace expectations.
- Attend all classes and on‑site sessions to get the most out of the program.
Getting Ready for the Application
To be considered, you’ll have to go through:
- A short selection test.
- One or more interviews with the hiring team.
- Psychometric tests that check how you think and work.
- Health checks to make sure you’re fit for the job.
Other useful items to bring:
- If you already have a driver’s licence, that’s a plus.
- Applicants must live in the Victor Khanye Local Municipality or within 50 km of the mining site.
Who Can Apply?
You only need one of these basic qualifications to apply:
- Finished Grade 12 (or Standard 10) and scored at least 40% in both English and Mathematics.
