Electoral Commission of South Africa: 2025 Internship Opportunities

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is looking for two interns to work in the Eastern Cape Provincial Office in East London. These internships last 24 months, pay a monthly stipend, and are open to anyone who finished university or a 3‑year diploma and is 35 years old or younger. The positions will give you real work experience in a public organisation that runs elections, which is a very important part of democracy.

Internship 1 – Administration

What you’ll do

  • Arrange travel, hotels, meetings and events for staff and guests.
  • Help with buying supplies, managing office supplies and paperwork.
  • Write letters and memos, put together data and reports.
  • Take notes at meetings and keep filing systems tidy.
  • Handle mail and other written communications.
  • Give support to the Provincial Electoral Officer.

What we need

  • Finished high school (Matric or Grade 12) or an N3/NTC Level 4 qualification, plus a bachelor’s degree or a national diploma in Project Management, Administration, Public Management or Office Administration.
  • Comfortable using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
  • Good writing and speaking skills.
  • Ready to learn new systems and to travel when needed.

Internship 2 – Electoral Operations

What you’ll do

  • Assist with election projects at the provincial level.
  • Help organise the distribution of election materials and equipment.
  • Help plan voter registration, by‑elections and set up voting stations.
  • Watch over election projects and spot potential problems.
  • Write reports and help with meetings for the Provincial Parliamentary Liaison Committee (PPLC).
  • Offer general admin support inside Electoral Operations.

What we need

  • Finished high school (Matric or Grade 12) or an N3/NTC Level 4 qualification, plus a bachelor’s degree or 3‑year national diploma in Public Management, Public Administration or Political Science.
  • Comfortable using MS Office.
  • Good written and verbal communication.
  • Willing to travel within the Eastern Cape.
  • Must be a registered voter and know the area.
