What the job requires
Essential requirements
- Grade 12 or Matric with the following subjects:
- Pure Mathematics – at least 50%
- Life Science or Physical Science
- A minimum overall average of 50%
- You must pass a Dis‑Chem proficiency test that lets you register as a learner basic assistant with SAPC.
Special conditions
- Only South African citizens can apply.
- Applicants must have a clean criminal record and clear credit history. MIE checks will be performed.
- You must pass the SAPC‑qualifying proficiency assessment.
What you’ll do
As a Dispensary Support worker, you’ll work directly under a pharmacist. Your daily tasks will include:
- Helping customers buy Schedule 1 medicines.
- Assisting in mixing non‑sterile medicines.
- Unpacking, putting on display, and cleaning shelves for prescriptions and over‑the‑counter (OTC) items.
- Learning to read prescriptions and following all legal and ethical rules.
- Picking, packing, labeling, and checking medicines with great accuracy.
- Managing stock, checking expiry dates, and keeping track of Schedule 1–5 medicines.
- Checking in on patients who need prescription updates or upcoming appointments.
- Using call‑centre scripts to help customers over the phone.
- Giving basic health information to customers.
- Helping with authorisation schemes for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and cancer medicines.
- Notifying managers when items are low or out of stock.
- Accepting new stock according to the company’s standard operating procedures (SOPs).
What skills you need
Must have
- Good English and another South African language.
- Strong time‑management and the ability to stay calm under pressure.
- Excellent talking and listening skills – great customer service is key.
- Sharp eye for details.
- Trustworthiness and honesty – these are non‑negotiable.
- Basic computer skills and good math ability.
- Ability to solve problems and work well with a team.
Nice to have
- Experience in retail or with an FMCG store, or any work with Dis‑Chem.
- Knowledge of drug and family planning products, or complementary medicines.
