This program is designed to give you hands‑on practice, real patient care responsibilities, and ongoing learning in one of South Africa’s biggest pharmacy chains.
What you need
Must have
- Completed Grade 12 or equivalent
- BPharm degree (four years)
- Basic computer skills – know how to use MS Office
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) or able to register soon
Nice to have
- Some work experience during your studies – e.g., part‑time jobs in a pharmacy
- Familiarity with Unisolve and E‑Scripting systems
What you will do
As an intern, you will do most of the tasks that a regular pharmacist does, but under close supervision. Your day could look like this:
Dispensary & patient care
- Read and understand prescriptions accurately
- Enter patient details into the pharmacy system
- Pick, pack, label, and give out medications
- Explain how to use the medicine and answer patient questions
- Sell Schedule 1 and 2 medicines – medicines you can buy over the counter
- Mix or prepare simple medicines when needed
- Make sure every prescription is signed off by a pharmacist
Operations
- Help manage and keep track of all stock (from S1 to S6)
- Repack medicines following standard rules
- Assist in ordering medicines that need a prescription
- Keep a record of customer profiles and any special notes
- Track prescriptions and remind customers about follow‑up appointments
- Help out at the front counter and self‑medication desk
- Take part in stock checks and reporting tasks
Medical aid & paperwork
- Fill out and submit medical aid claims
- Fix any rejected claims quickly
- Check that chronic, HIV, AIDS and cancer medicines have proper authorisation
- Explain to customers the difference between medical aid and cash prices
- Process all necessary paperwork accurately
Safety and clean workspace
- Follow Dis‑Chem’s standard operating procedures and dress code
- Make sure the pharmacy stays safe and tidy
- Use the occupational health and safety rules and report any hazards
- Keep your area clean and organised at all times
Key skills you’ll need
Must‑have
- Good communication – speak English and, if you can, a second language
- Friendly and helpful attitude toward customers
- Strong maths and problem‑solving abilities
- Careful attention to detail
- Good time management and the ability to work in a busy environment
- Honesty and professional behaviour
- Comfort with MS Office
Nice to have
- Experience or knowledge of fast‑moving consumer goods and retail
- Another language beyond your first two
- Basic knowledge of family planning or complementary medicine
What you need to be ready for
- Work retail hours – weekends and public holidays are included
- Stand for long periods during the day
- Hold a valid driver’s licence and have reliable transport
- Have a clean credit and criminal background check
- Be in good physical shape for the job
