City of Cape Town Energy Apprenticeship 2026 – Start Your Career

Energy Apprentice – City of Cape Town

The City of Cape Town is looking for an Energy Apprentice to join its Support Services Energy team. If you are 15‑plus, have a real interest in electricity, and want to learn while working, this job could be a great start to a future career in the electrical trade. The programme runs until 27 February 2026 and pays R139 554 per year (basic salary). The work takes place in the City of Cape Town’s offices in the Western Cape.

What the job is about

As an Energy Apprentice, you will learn how the city manages its power supply. You will help with small electrical tasks, observe professionals in the field, and gain hands‑on experience that most schools don’t offer. The program is designed to give you a solid base for a career as an electrician, a job that is in demand across South Africa.

Who can apply

You need a basic technical background in electrical subjects. The City of Cape Town accepts one of three educational paths:

  1. NTC 3 – a technical diploma covering Electrical Trade Theory, Maths, Engineering Science, Industrial Electronics, or another heavy‑current topic, together with a high‑school diploma.
  2. Technical Matric – a Grade 12 qualification that includes English, Electrical Trade Theory, Maths, Physical Science and any other subject.
  3. NCV 4 Electrical – a complete electrical diploma with seven subjects.

If you already have a trade licence or a National S Diploma or higher, you cannot join this programme. A valid driver’s licence (code C1 or the older code 10) is also required.

You must live in the City of Cape Town metropolitan area. And if you have medical problems that could interfere with safe work, such as epilepsy or colour blindness, the City will not be able to consider you for this role.

What you’ll get

  • Hands‑on learning – Work directly on real projects under the guidance of experienced technicians.
  • Workplace experience – See how a city’s energy department runs day‑to‑day, from maintenance to planning.
  • Skill building – Follow a clear training path that will help you move into a full‑time electrical role later.

How the selection works

When you apply, you agree that the City can use your personal data for recruitment. You may need to pass:

  • A background check
  • A personal ID verification
  • A lifestyle audit

You will also need to send certified copies of any qualifications. If you haven’t heard back within three months of the closing date, the application has not been accepted.
