Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2026 – Virology
The University of the Free State (UFS) is looking for a fresh PhD graduate to join its Division of Virology at the School of Pathology in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The fellowship is a one‑year contract that can be extended for up to two more years if the research goes well and funding is available. It starts as soon as possible after 14 November 2025 and is located on the Bloemfontein campus in South Africa.
What the Fellowship Is About
The UFS Postdoctoral Research Fellowship 2026 focuses on studies of infectious diseases, protein science that can be turned into practical tools, how viruses cause disease and how the immune system fights them, and on creating new antibodies or proteins that can help diagnose infections. The role gives a young scientist a chance to learn more about research inside a university, to work with senior professors, and to team up with research partners from other countries.
You will be paid R300 000 a year, and you will have a full‑time, on‑campus research position. You’ll need to spend about 80 % of the time at UFS and be ready to live in Bloemfontein for the whole fellowship.
Your Day‑to‑Day Tasks
- Publish at least three peer‑reviewed papers or book chapters in a year.
- Start new research projects and write grant applications to get outside money.
- Take part in UFS research meetings and help run postgraduate classes.
- Mentor students who are working on their own research projects.
These responsibilities help you build a strong research portfolio and grow your own team of students.
Who Should Apply?
- You must have a PhD in Virology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, or a closely related field. The degree must be earned within the last five years.
- You must not have any other full‑time paid job while you are on the fellowship.
- You need to be able to move to Bloemfontein for the whole duration of the fellowship.
- Full‑time, on‑campus work is required (80 % presence on campus).
- South African citizens get a priority, but other qualified applicants are welcome.
