SAPS Police Trainee Recruitment Programme 2027: How to Apply

The South African Police Service has opened applications for its Police Trainee Recruitment Programme 2027. The closing date is 13 November 2026. Many young people want a stable way to serve their communities and build a career in policing. This is one of the few entry-level paths available right now.

What the opportunity is

The South African Police Service is recruiting entry-level Police Trainees from all races and genders who want to pursue careers in policing. The post title is Police Trainee. The reference number is TRA26/27.

Successful applicants will undergo training as determined by the National Commissioner. You must be prepared to serve anywhere in South Africa. The appointment is made in terms of the South African Police Service Act, 1995 (Act No. 68 of 1995).

Training locations are various places across South Africa. During training you receive R5 000 per month. This is the advertised remuneration for the training period only.

After training and appointment, police officials may be responsible for preventing crime, combating crime, investigating crime, maintaining public order, protecting and securing people living in South Africa, protecting property, upholding the law, and enforcing the law.

Who can apply

You must meet every requirement. Many applicants worry they will miss one detail and get disqualified. Check carefully before you start.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and not older than 35 years on the closing date.
  • Have Grade 12 / Matric or an equivalent qualification.

You must also consent to fingerprint verification, buccal sample collection, criminal-record checks, background enquiries, security vetting, physical examination, medical examination, psychological assessment, and integrity assessment. You must be found physically, medically and mentally fit for appointment.

You must not have been dismissed from previous employment for serious misconduct relating to dishonesty, violence, sexual harassment, or drug-related misconduct.

Preference may be given to applicants who have a valid driver’s licence for at least a light motor vehicle. Preference may also apply if you have a relevant three-year tertiary qualification at NQF Level 6 or higher, Criminal Law qualifications, Policing qualifications, Forensic Investigation qualifications, or other relevant three-year tertiary qualifications at NQF Level 6 or higher. Grade 12 with the minimum requirements for admission to a Bachelor’s Degree may also help. A tertiary qualification is advantageous, but Grade 12 remains the minimum educational requirement.

What you gain

You receive structured training determined by the National Commissioner. During training the remuneration is R5 000 per month. After training and appointment you may take on the core duties of policing listed above. The work involves serving communities and upholding the law. Positions are limited, so only a portion of applicants will be selected.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online through the SAPS e-Recruitment platform. Only one application is allowed. The system restricts you to one application per person.

Go to the official SAPS e-Recruitment portal at https://erecruitment.saps.gov.za/ and look for the Police Trainee opportunity under reference TRA26/27. Register an account if you do not have one, verify your email, complete your profile, and submit your application.

The recruitment website may experience high traffic. Apply early to avoid delays on the closing date of 13 November 2026. Participation in the selection process does not guarantee appointment. SAPS is under no obligation to appoint every person who applies. Do not pay anyone to help you. SAPS recruitment is not for sale.

Correspondence is generally conducted with successful applicants. If you have not been contacted within three months after the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.

Tips to improve your chances

Many applicants struggle with the online system or leave applications until the last day. Prepare your documents in advance: proof of citizenship, your Grade 12 certificate or equivalent, and any driver’s licence or tertiary qualifications you want to mention.

Make sure you meet the fitness, medical, and language requirements. Visible tattoos that show in uniform will disqualify you. Be honest about your background. The checks are thorough.

Apply once, early, and carefully. Limited positions mean competition is high. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee selection.

Next steps

If you meet the requirements and want to start a career in policing, review the list above and submit your application through the official portal before 13 November 2026. Apply early so system traffic does not affect you. Good preparation and honesty give you the best chance in a competitive process. Good luck.
