What the apprenticeship programme offers

Transnet’s Artisan in Training Apprenticeship Programme (2026/2027) provides structured technical training. You will work on real projects, learn to use tools and equipment, and gain trade‑specific knowledge. The programme is available at several Transnet sites across the country.

Who can apply – eligibility and requirements

All positions are open to South African citizens aged 18‑30 who have not yet earned a Red Seal or trade certificate. You must have a qualification that includes Mathematics (minimum 50%) and relevant technical subjects. Acceptable qualifications are:

  • N2–N6 certificate (or N3–N6) with Trade Theory, Engineering Science, Mathematics and another relevant subject.
  • NCV Level 4 with Trade Theory, Mathematics and vocational subjects.
  • Technical Grade 12 with Mathematics, Physical Science and Trade Theory.

You will also need to attach all relevant academic records to your application.

Location: Koedoespoort, Gauteng

  • Complete N2–N6, NCV 4 or Technical 12 as listed above.
  • Mathematics ≥ 50 %.
  • Age 18‑30, South African citizen.
  • No existing trade certificate.

Electrician – Reference req5978

Locations: Koedoespoort, North End, Cambridge, Salt River

  • Same qualification options as above.
  • Mathematics ≥ 50 %.
  • Age 18‑30, South African citizen.
  • No existing trade certificate.

Fitter & Turner – Reference req5977

Location: Koedoespoort, Gauteng

  • Qualification options as above.
  • Mathematics ≥ 50 %.

Millwright – Reference req5976

Locations: Bloemfontein, Germiston, Koedoespoort, Salt River

  • Qualification options as above.

Mechanical Fitter – Reference req5975

What you will learn

The apprenticeship will teach you how to:

  • Plan and prepare work sites.
  • Set up and use hand, power and measuring tools.
  • Manufacture, assemble and install components.
  • Inspect, test and commission equipment.
  • Maintain and repair technical systems safely.

Employers also value soft skills. You will develop problem‑solving, communication, analytical thinking and teamwork abilities.
