Apply for the City of Polokwane External Bursary 2026 – a chance to get a free tuition grant and start your university journey
If you’re a high‑school graduate or a Grade 12 student in Polokwane who wants to go to university but can’t afford the fees, the City of Polokwane Municipality has a special program just for you. The External Bursary Programme will give you money to cover the cost of a first degree, national diploma, or national N diploma at any recognised South African university or college in the city or surrounding area. It’s a real opportunity to study without the burden of expensive tuition.
Who can take part?
To be eligible you need to meet all of the following:

| Program of study | You must be aiming for a first degree, national diploma or national N diploma. | 
| Location | You must live in the Polokwane Municipality and be a permanent resident. | 
| Background | You must come from a disadvantaged home situation. | 
| Nationality | You must be a South African citizen. | 
| Other bursaries | You should not already be receiving a different bursary. | 
If you win, you will sign a simple agreement with the city that explains the terms of the bursary.
What documents do you need?
When you fill in the application, attach certified copies (no more than 3 months old) of each of these papers:
- South African ID – your own.
 - Your latest Grade 12 results or certificate if you are still a Grade 12 student.
 - ID of a parent or legal guardian.
 - A provisional acceptance letter from an accredited university or college (private schools are excluded).
 - Proof that you live in Polokwane – for example:
- A letter from your local traditional authority, or
 - A recent municipal utility bill dated within the last three months.
 
 - Proof of your household income – this could be a:
- Certified income statement if a parent is employed, or
 - Affidavit if a parent is not working, or
 - Proof of a pension or SASSA grant if applicable.
 
 - If your parents are divorced, include a divorce decree.
 - If one or both parents have died, include a death certificate.
 - If you have a disability, attach relevant medical documentation.
 
Having all these documents ready will speed up the process and show that you have carefully read the guidelines.
