What the internship offers

The City’s Community Development Department is looking for an intern to support its Business Management Support Directorate. The role is focused on Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (GRC) within the municipal environment. It is a temporary placement of up to 18 months, based at JD House, 7th Floor, 27 Stiemens Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg.

Who can apply

You are eligible if you meet all of the following:

  • Have a Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) certificate.
  • Hold a Diploma or Degree at NQF Level 6 or 7 in one of these areas: Internal Audit, Auditing, Risk Management, Accounting, Financial Accounting, Financial Management, Public Administration or Public Management. Your qualification must include modules on governance, audit or risk.
  • Are a resident of the City of Johannesburg.
  • Are a current student or recent graduate from a Johannesburg community who has not previously completed an internship in the same field (an exception is possible if the earlier internship was unrelated).
  • Can provide a full academic transcript that shows exposure to GRC‑related subjects.

What you will gain

The internship pays a basic stipend of R10 109.86 per month. You will develop practical skills in:

  • Municipal governance frameworks and risk‑management systems.
  • Audit coordination and compliance reporting.
  • Performance monitoring and documentation.
  • Using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) for data handling.
  • Professional communication, teamwork and time‑management.

No prior work experience is required; your academic projects and case studies will be valued.
