If you’re looking for hands‑on experience in public housing, City of Johannesburg is accepting applications for its Student Internship Programme 2026 – and the deadline is fast approaching.

What the internship is

The Human Settlements Department is offering a paid internship in the Public Housing Programme. The placement is at 222 Smit Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. It will run for up to 18 months and provides on‑the‑job training that counts toward your qualification.

Who can apply

You must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of the City of Johannesburg.
  • Have completed Grade 12 (Matric) – NQF Level 4.
  • Hold a National Diploma (or be studying for one) in Town Planning, Civil Engineering, Project Management, Construction Management or any built‑environment field at NQF Level 7.
  • OR have an N6 qualification and need in‑service training to finish your diploma, plus a current enrolment letter from your institution.
  • Never have taken part in an internship programme before.

What you will gain

The role gives you practical experience as a Project Coordinator on public‑housing projects. You will learn to:

  • Coordinate and monitor programmes and projects.
  • Understand procurement strategy, building contracts and tender compliance.
  • Follow departmental administrative procedures.

Stipends are paid monthly:

  • If you have completed at least 360 credits – R10 109,86 (basic salary, no benefits).
  • If you are still studying – R3 500,00 (basic salary, no benefits).

How to apply (step‑by‑step)

  1. Gather your documents: ID, Matric certificate, diploma or enrolment letter, proof of Johannesburg residence.
  2. Open Google Chrome – the CoJ portal works best on this browser.
  3. Visit the official application form: Apply for the City of Johannesburg Student Internship 2026.
  4. Complete all fields and attach the required documents.
  5. Submit before 23:59 on 29 June 2026.
  6. You can also apply via the City’s website: www.joburg.org.za.

Tips to improve your chances

  • Check that all information matches your official documents – typos can lead to rejection.
  • Write a brief cover note explaining why you want experience in public housing and how your studies relate.
  • Show that you understand the Batho Pele principles and can keep information confidential.
  • Proofread your application for grammar and spelling; a clear, error‑free submission stands out.
  • Submit early. Many applicants wait until the last day and encounter technical glitches.
  • People with disabilities are encouraged to apply; include any necessary accommodation notes.

Next steps

The City will shortlist candidates and contact only those selected. If you do not hear back within six weeks after the closing date, consider the application unsuccessful and look for other opportunities.

Good luck – your first step into a career in human settlements could start right here, right now.
