About the Midvaal Fire Fighter Internship

Midvaal Local Municipality runs a full‑time, three‑year training program for youth who are unemployed or looking for a new career. The course mixes classroom learning, fitness drills, and real fieldwork. After you finish, you’ll have the skills to:

  • Respond to fires and other emergencies
  • Work with a team of firefighters
  • Handle heavy equipment and dangerous situations responsibly

The internship also gives you a chance to keep learning and later move into a permanent firefighting job.


Minimum Requirements

To be considered you need to meet these basics:

  • High school Diploma or equivalent (Grade 12)
  • Completed Firefighter 1 & 2 and Hazmat Awareness & Operations courses (or same level)
  • First Aid Level 3 or Basic Ambulance Course certificate
  • Code C driver’s license
  • Good medical and physical condition (able to work in the field)
  • Able to swim confidently
  • No serious phobias like feeling trapped (claustrophobia) or fear of heights (acrophobia)
  • Prior experience in fire or rescue work helps
  • Hardworking, disciplined, and trustworthy personality

Preference will be given to people who live in the Sedibeng Region. A minimum of three months of internship experience is a plus.


What You’ll Do

During the internship, you’ll:

  • Follow daily tasks and orders from the Station Officer
  • Inspect, test, and maintain firefighting vehicles and gear
  • Keep all equipment clean and ready for use
  • Tell the team if any equipment is broken or needs repair
  • Help fight grass, wildland, and building fires
  • Join in rescue and recovery operations
  • Keep people and property safe during emergencies
  • Support the control room when needed
  • Carry out any other duties assigned by senior officers

How Much You’ll Earn

  • Stipend: R8,786.58 per month (about R105,439 per year)
  • Contract: 3 Years
