National Treasury CAA 2026 – Internship & Career Opportunities

What’s the job?
The South African National Treasury is looking for fresh graduates to join its Chartered Accountants Academy (CAA) Programme 2026. This is a 36‑month full‑time training contract that will help you become a Chartered Accountant (CA(SA)) and give you a front‑row seat to how the public sector manages money and makes budget rules. If you love numbers, policy, and want to make a real difference, this could be the right path.

Why you might want to apply

  • Hands‑on learning: You’ll work in real Treasury offices – Pretoria, Johannesburg, Cape Town, or Durban – and see how the nation’s finances are run.
  • Skill building: You’ll sharpen your accounting, audit, and analytical skills while learning how to write clear, trustworthy reports.
  • Policy influence: Part of your job will involve shaping financial rules and helping the Treasury stay on top of new ways to manage money.
  • A steady salary: You’ll get a yearly stipend of R397,116 that covers all costs – no extra bills.
  • Career launchpad: At the end of the three years you’ll be ready to sit for the CA(SA) exams and start a career that could last your whole life.

The Treasury is an equal‑opportunity workplace. If you have a disability, the company encourages you to apply and has an Employment Equity Plan in place.

What you’ll do

  1. Rotate through different Treasury units – each place will help you learn a different part of public finance.
  2. Create a Learning Agreement – a simple contract you sign within the first three months that spells out what you’ll study and what the team expects.
  3. Take part in assessments – a technical test on accounting, and an integrity check to show you’re trustworthy.
  4. Pass other checks – the Treasury will confirm your qualifications, run a background check, and make sure you’re a South African citizen.

A quick note: the Treasury does not allow AI‑generated content in the tests. If your application is found to use AI without saying so, you’ll be disqualified.

Who can apply

To be eligible, you must:

  • Hold a Certificate in the Theory of Accounting (CTA), or
  • Have a similar qualification that meets the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) rules so you can sit for the Initial Test of Competence (ITC) in January 2026.

If your qualification came from another country, you’ll need to have it checked by SAQA. You will cover that cost yourself.

How to apply

  1. Create a profile on the Treasury’s e‑Recruitment system.
  2. Upload the following documents in PDF or JPG format:
    • CV
    • South African ID
    • Grade 12 / Matric certificate
    • Full academic transcript
  3. Submit your application by the deadline.
  4. Keep an eye on the e‑Recruitment dashboard; you’ll see if the team has a decision.
  5. If you hear nothing in 3 months after the closing date, it probably means you weren’t selected.
