Toyota South Africa is looking for young, unemployed people who want a real job in the auto world. The company is launching the Learner Maintenance (Unemployed Production) Learnership Programme for 2026. If you are from South Africa, especially in Durban, and you have a love for machines and building things, this is a chance to learn a useful skill and earn a certificate while working.

Important dates and place

  • Apply by: 19 December 2025
  • Training location: Prospecton, Durban, KwaZulu‑Natal

What the Learnership is all about

The program is a practical course that teaches you how to keep cars and parts running. You will spend time in a real factory, working with real tools and machines. When you finish, you will hold an NQF Level 3 qualification that many employers in engineering and manufacturing look for.

What you will learn

  • Teamwork: How to work with others on a job site.
  • Safety: Using hand tools safely and knowing what to do if something goes wrong.
  • Assembly: Building parts and putting them together.
  • Engineering drawings: Reading and understanding blueprints.
  • Marking off: Accurately measuring and marking parts for production.
  • Welding: Basic welding techniques.
  • Machines: Operating and monitoring production equipment.
  • Surface prep: Preparing surfaces before painting or finishing.
  • Fire safety: Basic fire‑fighting knowledge.
  • Operations: Understanding how parts move from one station to another and how products get shipped.

These skills are useful if you want a job in auto manufacturing or any industry that builds or repairs mechanical items.

What you need to qualify

You must have at least one of the following:

  • A National Technical Certificate (levels N3 to N6).
  • Or a high‑school diploma (matric) with a technical focus. The technical subjects should include:
    • Mathematics and Physical Science or Engineering Science.
    • Electrical Trade Theory or Mechanical Trade Theory or Motor Trade Theory.
    • Mechanical Drawing or Graphical Design.

If you don’t have a formal diploma, you can still try if you have a strong interest and the right attitude.

What skills help you succeed

  • Talk well: You need to explain problems and give updates.
  • Plan and organise: Keep track of tasks and deadlines.
  • Adapt: Things change in a factory; you need to adjust quickly.
  • Think logically: Solve problems using facts and reason.
  • Gather details accurately: Double‑check measurements and information.
  • Keep going: Learn new things and don’t give up when a task is hard.

These abilities will help you finish the learnership and do well on the day‑to‑day job.

What you will get at the end

  • NQF Level 3 certificate that shows you can work in maintenance or production in the automotive industry.
  • A proven skill set that makes you ready for more advanced jobs or further study.

The certificate is a ticket to future work – you will be able to apply for jobs that need hands‑on experience in engineering or manufacturing.
