Pharmacist Assistant (Basic) Grade 2 – A Health Job in KwaZulu‑Natal

The KwaZulu‑Natal Department of Health is looking for people who want to help keep communities healthy. If you have a Grade 12 certificate and are registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as a Pharmacy Assistant (Basic), you can apply for 14 contract posts in different district offices around the province. The role lasts from now until 31 March 2026 and pays R162,894 a year. The work is split across many districts, giving you a chance to serve different towns and villages.

What You Need to Qualify

  • Grade 12 certificate – this is the minimum education requirement.
  • SAPC registration as a Pharmacy Assistant (Basic) – you must have a current registration for 2025.

What helps you stand out

  • A valid Code B (08) driver’s licence – handy if you need to travel between clinics.
  • Basic computer skills – knowing how to use MS Office is a plus.

Skills and Knowledge

The job asks for a mix of practical and soft skills. You should be able to:

  1. Add, subtract and work with numbers – most pharmacy work involves counting doses and keeping inventory.
  2. Understand pharmacy workflows – know what prepacking, compounding, stock control and dispensing involve.
  3. Communicate clearly – you’ll talk to nurses, doctors, and patients about medicines.
  4. Stay organised – managing supplies and paperwork is a big part of the job.
  5. Keep a clean environment – good housekeeping keeps medicines safe and reduces infection risk.

What You’ll Do

Medicine Preparation

  • Prepack drugs for patients and clinics.
  • Write or check paperwork that tracks each dose.
  • Clean tools and work areas, such as tablet counters and spatulas.
  • Mix medicines under a pharmacist’s watch.
  • Order raw materials, labels, and packaging supplies when needed.

Clinic Supply Management

  • Hand out long‑term medication to patients.
  • Pack and label medicines for clinic use.
  • Check orders from clinics to make sure the right items are sent.
  • Deliver medicine supplies to different health facilities.

Information & Support

  • Answer questions from nurses and doctors about medicine usage.
  • Teach staff during short training sessions.
  • Talk to patients about how to take medicines properly.

Pharmacy Housekeeping

  • Sweep shelves, wipe refrigerators, and keep the storage area tidy.
  • Make sure maintenance schedules for equipment are followed.
  • Deal with spills safely to avoid contamination.
  • Help with programmes that give patients medicines for several months at once.
