Job Opportunity: Emergency Care Officer (ECO) in the Eastern Cape

If you love helping people in urgent situations and have a valid driver’s licence, the Eastern Cape Department of Health is looking for Emergency Care Officers to work in its EMS stations. These positions—Grades 1 through 3—are open across seven districts, from Nelson Mandela Metro to Chris Hani. You’ll get paid between R187 488 and R286 521 per year, depending on the grade, and you’ll be part of a team that saves lives every day.

What you need to qualify

Grade 1 (Basic Ambulance Assistant – BAA)

  • A National Senior Certificate.
  • A completed Basic Life Support (BLS) course.
  • HPCSA registration as a BAA.
  • A Code 10 driver’s licence with a Personal Driver’s Permit (PDP).
  • Good knowledge of BLS protocols.

Grade 3 (Ambulance Emergency Assistant – AEA)

  • Completed Intermediate Life Support (ILS) course.
  • HPCSA registration as an AEA.
  • A Code 10 driver’s licence with PDP.
  • Solid understanding of ILS procedures.

All candidates must be able to read and write in English, keep records accurately, and be willing to travel to the assigned EMS station.


Daily duties

  • Respond to emergency calls and provide medical care according to HPCSA rules.
  • Drive safely to hospitals while transporting patients.
  • Fill out patient records, vehicle checklists, and log sheets.
  • Keep ambulances clean and make sure all equipment works.
  • Transfer patients between hospitals when required.
  • Do any extra tasks that your supervisor asks for.

These responsibilities are the same in every district, but the work environment can vary depending on the area.
